Tour My House Tuesday: Kitchen/Dining Room

**I would love to be able to show you larger photos...not sure why some of these are able to be enlarged and some are not.  If anyone has any advice for me on how to do this, I will take it!  So sorry it is not working right now!

Continuing our tour of my house...today it is the kitchen and dining room!  Last week I showed you my family room, which is adjacent to this space.  I really like that the family room and kitchen are in the back of the house; it makes me feel more protected somehow.  (P.S. Can you spot my floppy dog Frankie in the photo below?  He didn't feel like moving.)

When we went to select the kitchen cabinets, I told the guy that I wanted white with black knobs, and he told me that I was one of only three houses in the whole neighborhood (out of hundreds of homes) that had chosen white over natural wood.  He totally made me second-guess my choice!  I am so glad I stuck with it, though, because I love how the cabinets look with the dark wood floors and the black granite countertops.  It has the danger of being a very cold, stark space, but I hope I prevented that by using a warm beige-y yellow on the walls.

Above is a sweet little corner of my kitchen: it is usually covered with my calendar and any number of coupons, notes, post-its...you get the idea.  But it still feels cozy because of my little lamp and cute chalkboard!

When we chose the cabinets, we also got to decide how they were configured.  I begged them to re-orient the kitchen island so that I could have bookshelves facing away from the hubbub of the rest of the kitchen (they are facing my laundry room/pantry).  They aren't the most stylized bookshelves in the world, but they are so stinkin' convenient!

The hanging bookcase above was made by a family friend for me when I got married.  It weighs a ton and my husband practically called the Colorado Builder's Association before he let this thing hang on the wall by itself.  But it looks like it was made for the space, so I hope he feels it was worth the stress of hanging it!  Hmmm....I hope he doesn't answer that.

Yes, this is silly, but I hated the builder's poor excuse for a faucet when we moved in.  I found this charming faucet on ebay and begged until my husband installed it.  I am not sorry...it's like a little jewelry for my kitchen!

Lastly, just a little view of my dining room table with cute little vases full of...what are these?  Berries?  Some kind of bittersweet?  Do I even know what bittersweet is?  (Nope.)

Hope you enjoyed the tour!  As you read this, my kitchen is probably covered in Cheerios and half empty coffee mugs!  I'm sure you can't relate, can you?

Your kitchen is beautiful! I am so with you on the white cabinets. I love love love white cabinets too and would choose them over a natural wood.

That little shelf on the island is awesome too. What a great way to hide/store stuff.

Love the kitchen!!

The faucet and the bookshelves are my favorites...I wish I would have thought about the bookshelves, they would come in handy with all the cookbooks!!

We have white distressed cabinets in our kitchen....everyone in our development went with the oh so popular dark cherry and very modern look......I am very happy with the white look and our paint color is very similar to yours too!!

Can't wait to see the next room in your lovely home!

Have fun cleaning up those cheerios!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE your kitchen. My kitchen cabinets are cream with black hardware and we have black appliances (great minds think alike?) But what I love the most is your GORGEOUS faucet. I would love to have a faucet like that (we have your standard gooseneck cheapie right now.) Oh and the bookshelf too. Good call on that one ;-)

Your kitchen is beautiful and think you made a great choice with the white cabinets.

I love your rows of berries too. My grandfather used to go out and pick bittersweet every year. What he would pick would be a lot more orange than those berries. There is a store where I get fresh flowers and they always have those berries, sometimes they are even a green color. I think they are so pretty.

Thanks for inviting us into your home!

Love your faucet! ANd what a nice kitchen. I am glad you stuck to your guns! I think those berries are St. John's wart or hypercium(sp?) berries... if they are, fyi they are poisonous... I am always paranoid about that stuff around my kids. I love that cozy corner and that bookcase is a great idea!

What a pretty kitchen! I also wanted white cabinets when we built, but our only white choice with the builder was laminate, so I went with the wood (maple). Still long for an airy white kitchen though, so be glad you have such pretty cabinets! :) Love the berries on your table,a nd your island is fabulous!!

Stacey

Your kitchen is so beautiful. So funny aobut the cabinets - our builders wouldn't put white cabinets in because they said "no one does that anymore." I was pretty sure they do - yours are lovely. I also love your faucet.

Carrie,

I found your blog through the Reluctant Entertainers blog. Anyway, I would love to hear about your Bible study that you are doing with the 5 areas of a woman (something like that). Also, love the kitchen - we also have white cabinets and I love them still after five years. I find them easier to keep clean, because you can't "hide" the dirt.

This is a message for KIM (and anyone else who is interested!):

I tried to email you but for some reason I can't get your email to show up on Blogger...so here we go! I hope you get this! The Bible study I have just started is called "Five Aspects of Woman" and it is written by Barbara Mouser. It is pretty long...we just began and I think we will go into May 2009 before we finish. I have heard that it is just fabulous for getting to know other women in your group, because it really touches on aspects of our lives in an intimate way...as masters of our domain (home or work or wherever you "rule"), wives, mothers, women of wisdom and the "glory of man." (That's the one I understand the least about.)

So far I just love it because it is very Biblically-based, and it is very study-oriented, with homework and CDs to listen to, not just a chapter book you read. I have NOTHING against chapter books and have read a ton of them in Bible studies over the years, but I am really enjoying that this is interactive and really makes my brain work!

I hope I have answered your questions, but please feel free to email me with any other thoughts! :)

Hypericum berries! I used to use them all the time in wedding bouquets - I had them in my own reception topiaries. They are so cute, but yeah, don't let anyone eat them!

Jewelry is right! That is one gorgeous faucet for a gorgeous kitchen! I 2nd guessed and went with the wood and everyday I get mad about that one darn decision!

What a beautiful kitchen! It looks both functional and inviting. I imagine it's the pulse of your home.

Looking forward to the rest of the tour!

Carrie,

Thanks for commenting and giving me some information about the Five Aspects of Woman study - something I might look into in the future!

Did anyone tell you how to enlarge pictures? If not, this is what I know. When you are uploading them you can choose the size and then if you drag them around on your post then you cannot click on them to get them bigger. I upload them in the order I want them and then type around them. Does that make sense?

I'm so glad I found your blog through the LEADERS. We are renovating a 102 year old home and I am debating the white cabinets vs. wood finish. Did you get a glaze finish or just white? If you don't mind me asking, where did you purchase? Staying within budget is quite an art and the custom cabinets I hoped for are a distant memory!:-)
