Tour My House Tuesday: Family Room

**P.S. The color of the walls is called "Cracker Crumb" and it's by Lowe's house brand, Valspar.

For the next few weeks I thought it would be fun to host a weekly tour of my house.  I love seeing photos of other people's houses so I hope you like it!  Today it's my family room.

The family room shares the back of the house with the kitchen and dining room.  Every room is open to the others, which I love, especially when I am cooking and I can see Nina as she plays.

I was used to an older, more traditional house, so this house was an adjustment for me.  The fireplace and TV nook are side by side, which I thought was strange, but have gotten used to.

I really miss having a charming wooden mantle above the fireplace to decorate.  Instead the "thing" out here in Colorado is to have a huge drywalled cavern above the TV/fireplace.  It has been a challenge to decorate because the size of the space tends to dwarf anything I put there.  I am always tweaking it! (Yesterday's post included a photo of this space with my "Boo" pumpkins.  It is fun to decorate for holidays!)

I have tried my best to make my house reflect the cozy, traditional feel that I love, even though it is a new construction.  This piece above was my mother's hope chest, which she painted a garish midnight blue with gold accents in her teenage days.  Thankfully she let me strip and refinish it, and now I love how it looks in my family room.  Hopefully it adds to the cozy factor!

I'll be posting a new tour for the next few weeks on Tuesdays.  Eventually I will run out of rooms, but it will be fun in the meantime!

I love your family room! That tv nook is so unique and would be fun to decorate! In my last two houses, I had a kitchen off the family room so I could see the kids. But, now they are getting older and not playing in the family room! Can't wait to see more..I love your style!

You know, the "cavern" above the fireplace may be a bit of a challenge to decorate, but on the bright side, I do love the windows there. They give a nice light. Your family room looks FABULOUS!

Love the family room. It looks so cozy! I am sure there are many family moments by the fire. That room just sorta leads you in that direction.

Your house does look cozy! Looks like a great place to curl up and read a book with a glass of wine.

My parents have an old trunk similar to yours, and in the 70s they "antiqued" it by painting it red and black. Ugh. It's a shame! I can't even imagine what it would be like to try to refinish it.

What a pretty living room! I love the fabric on your chair/couch, and your mom's hope chest is a lovely piece! My "dream house" actually had that same style of mantel and floor layout--I really like it! It makes for wonderful family & entertaining space! Thanks for the tour--can't wait to see more of your home! :)

Love your family room and the light you have in there! My family room is adjacent to the garage and has 2 brick walls, so very dark...I helped it out with the paint color we chose, so it's warmer now, but still darker than I like.

Can't wait to see more :)

I also live in Denver and have a "cavern" above my TV and fireplace. I, however, don't have windows. You've done a nice job - can't wait to see more of your home.

I love your house tours. Very fun! And those windows above your fireplace are beautiful.

I love your post about the rub-on letters. I need to get some and try them out. And your new shoes are too cute!

I just read the post where you mentioned having a labradoodle. We must talk! I've been trying to convince my husband that we need to get a doodle when it's time to add a canine to our family. He's not so sure.

You family room is so pretty! I love how warm and cozy it is. What color did you use on the walls in there? I'm not a big fan of new construction either... which is what we are also living in. At least your room has some personality! :o)

I know what you mean about new construction - it is harder to get a traditional look. You're doing a great job, though. I love your family room. And I love that chest - how special! :)

Your house is very cozy & welcoming. I'd love to see bigger pictures so I can check everything out.

We had the cavern tv thing in our last house - it's tough to decorate around. Have you seen it done with shutters to cover it up when you want to? Just a thought.

It is beautiful. I like the idea of doing another room each day. We often only see snippets of certain areas of each others homes. It is nice to see how it all comes together
