Area Rug Advice!

Hey girls!  Happy Wednesday!

I am just checking in because I need a little advice from my decorating consultants, i.e., you!

Working on Henry's nursery, I have run into a problem.  The area rug that I really love, pictured below from Pottery Barn Kids, is a whopping $299 for a 5x8 size.  Since I would like to be able to send Henry to college (or heck, buy him a Happy Meal when he gets some teeth!), this option is out.  But let's take a minute and ogle it, shall we?

How cute is that?!  I've been looking for inexpensive alternative rugs, and I have come up with this one, shown below.  It is also a 5x8, and is significantly less expensive than the Pottery Barn Kids model.  Even including shipping costs, this rug is only $69!

The only problem is that, if you look at the colors up close, the stripes are actually black and red, with a light blue border.  Henry's room is comprised of red and navy, not black, so I worry this will clash.

What would you do?  Get the cheaper rug and hope for the best, or keep looking?  Keep in mind I have been searching for something similar since he was born, with no luck, so I am not sure where else to look.

I am still working on a few other projects for Henry's room!  I ran into some glitches and needed to order a few materials from eBay, which has slowed the process down a little bit.  Soon, though...soon I hope to have some stuff to show you!

Thank you for your advice!

    Love them both!

  2. The first idea that came to my mind was to check and see if you could buy some navy and red remnants and have them put together and bound.

    Something to think about....

  3. I would keep looking. The PB is cute, but you could probably find something equally as cute, that wasn't black. Maybe look for other rugs besides the stripe?

  4. i think with the blue trim the rug would work well in his room. you might can add some other black touches such as framed black and white photos in matted black frames to tie in a little more of that color in his room...
another though, have you checked or had a friend check a pb outlet? they usually have some good prices on their area rugs...

  5. I would go ahead and get the cheaper one. In no time at all you will be adding toys and things that don't exactly fit the decor. That black stripe will not bug you then. That's what I'm thinkin'. ;)

  6. I was in Walmart last night and they have rugs that mimic the PB ones--for 20 bucks. They might be worth a look!!

  7. I would keep looking. I think if you ordered the cheaper one you would NOT be happy.

  8. I would keep looking! there are so many rug web sites that you might find the pottery barn one cheaper somewhere else! Since rugs aren't an emergency, I would take the time and find something you really love that you think si worth it.. you could even latch hook one yourself! Have you ever seen the kits at Hobby lobby? Google navy/red rugs and see what happens! :) Jen

  9. I was once told that it is more appropriate to wear black shoes with navy than to try to match the exact shade of navy which can be difficult. Maybe that also translates into area rugs? Therefore, the black stripe works just fine!

  10. Did you try:
    Overstock.com?
Also, I found a rug that is a color block rug with all the same colors as what you are looking for at Sam's Club-It is not stripes, but blocks of 12X12 colors-bordered by the lighter blue...
    Good luck!

  12. The frugal one in me says to go with the less expensive one and incorporate a few other black things in the room (if it will look right).
The not so frugal one in me says that if you don't LOVE the rug, then don't get it, keep looking. My motto is always, when in doubt, say no.

  13. That is a tough one! I think I might keep looking. If the shipping is not a killer then I might order the cheaper one and see if it looks like navy in the room or if it really looks black and then you can send it back if it doesn't work. It might work though.

  15. I would keep looking but if you still can't find what you are looking for I would go with the cheaper one and add black into the room.

  16. I would keep looking. I would never be happy with the black. Even if other people didn't notice, I would always know.

  17. Keep looking. I am not a fan of the black and red with blue. Better to wait and find one you love at a price you can handle then buy it because it is cheap and available (and end up hating it).

  18. I'm all about the budget - go with the inexpensive one! Try and pull some black accents into the room if you are concerned about the black color. Think of the black as a neutral color. Hope this helps!

  19. Keep looking....don't settle...it's Henry's room for gosh sakes! ;O)

  20. I would keep looking. Hopefully, Target or Wal-Mart will have one that might work!

  21. I would probably keep looking - I think the black would always bug you a little.

  22. By throwing in a few black accessories into the room... it ought to pull out the punch your looking for.

  23. Have you tried Walmart? They have some really cute striped ones. And Target also has a lot of red/blue things in their kids' section. Maybe one of those has something? :)

  24. Hmmm, tricky dilemma. My gut instinct would be to keep looking. I hate when I see something that would be perfect but it is too pricey because then I get it in my head that that would be the only/best option and it's hard to break out of that "perfect image" to find something else. If the black on the cheaper option bugs you though, I don't know that it will quit bugging you once you get it in the room. I have a bad habit of knowing it wasn't what I wanted and then it bothers me every time I see it, so I've learned to not get it if something about it bugs me. ;) But, if you think that it won't bug you...and you want to quit looking because you have a newborn and you are short on time and energy...then I don't think the black is a huge deal. Obviously, navy would be better & more ideal, but I don't think that the black stripe is going to ruin the overall effect of Henry's room.

I wouldn't go with the pricey PB version, but is there a PB Outlet anywhere near Denver? I can't remember. We have one about an hour away, and they have a huge section of rugs. If you call the outlet and ask, they will often tell you when they receive shipments in the different areas (which day of the week & time it is usually unloaded for furniture, rugs, etc.) and you can call at that time to see if they received the item you are looking for as long as you have the name from the catalog (sometimes the number helps too.) This is a good way to be on the lookout for a specific item you have your eye on.

Good luck finding something you really like!

  25. I would buy a cheap plain rug that is one of the lighter colors I wanted (say, light blue). Then I would paint the darker colors. There is a certain type of fabric paint to use and I forget what it's called. It is not regular fabric paint. I've bought it at Michael's.

  27. Have you checked into doing a Flor rug? It is not as cheap as the $69 rug but not as expensive as the PB one. Go to www.flor.com and search for "Flag" Home Team. It is a navy, red and cream stripe that might work!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I wouldn't go for the cheaper one at all. I think the black would clash!!

Like someone else said, check e-bay...sometime I have found stuff so much cheaper (still new)

    Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Have you googles red and navy striped rug? I ask because I have in mind a striped shower curtain that I want and I google the main colors and got good results. Just a thought.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oh, I think I'd keep looking. It's a hard call. Have you looked at Land of Nod? I'm not sure what their prices are like now (they may be in the same ballpark as PB) but I know I've gotten some good deals from them in the past. Just a thought.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think the black and red rug will be great if you have other touches of black in the room. I love black and white photos in black frames. I can't remember but do you have black curtain rods? Could you add black shelving? If you just have a touch of black the rug will tie in and be fine.

  32. I hope no one else has posted this idea, 'cuz I'll look like such a CHEATER, but what about painting one? You could use canvas and paint a floor cloth, or buy an inexpensive sisal rug and paint on the stripes. Otherwise, I'd say keep looking, don't settle for one you don't LOVE! :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh that is a tough one! I think I would keep looking too! I know you've been going crazy trying to find one already...I hope you find "the" one so soon at a great deal!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I loooove the canvas idea that Kimm had! I know that may not be very comfy though. I would hold out on the cheaper one...you will regret it I think. (I think you are a lot like me that way!) Have you tried Overstock.com? If you still can't find anything, you could always get the black one later and add black touches in the room like people have mentioned. Good luck!! (Rugs are HARD!!)

  35. I would keep looking...it's very rare that your second choice is the best choice!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I would NOT buy the expensive one because I am way to cheap for that!

I would also be afraid the black and blue would clash so if it was me, I honestly would not buy the cheaper one either and would keep searching...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Definitely keep looking.

The black will clash and the expensive one is just...too expensive!

  38. i tend to get caught up in matching everything but i think its more important to complement if that makes any sense. it doesn't have to match exactly because then it gets too matchy, matchy as long as it goes well with the room and complements everything else then i say go for the cheaper one.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I would def keep looking. If all else fails and you can't find one that will work maybe the one at PB will be on sale by that time!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I would say keep looking. Even if it is cheaper it is still a good deal of money and you will probably worry about the black more than you think. Hope this helps and that you are doing well!

  42. I bought my little one a PB rug for her nursery...and have not been happy. It was too expensive to be unraveling. It doesn't even get much use!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I might be a little late to comment, but I agree with those who have said to keep looking! I think you need to find something that you will be OK staring at every time you walk into the room. I don't have any advice of where to look, but I know that you'll find something you'll love!

For my daughter's comforter, I waited until the right one jumped out at me! It took a good 2 months with her sleeping with just sheets, but I finally found it! ;)

  44. Have you thought about carpet tiles? You could get the same effect, but definitely for less. Get your ideas at www.flor.com then have it done for less at a local carpet store.

  45. When in doubt I always keep looking. Something good always turns up :)

  46. Oooh Carrie, this is a tough one girl! I don't envy your choice hun! Alright...I'm zero help in this debate, aren't I? But, if I lived closer I'd pull up a chair or floor pillow and enjoy a glass of wine while you decided! ;)
Hugs to you and your sweet fam~ Les

  47. No matter what the cost of the rug, (I'd go cheaper), it will still get dirt on it, puke on it, playdough ground into it, etc. I'd hold off on the expensive one until he is old enough to take care of it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hey Carrie!!

Just catching up after returning from vaca.....not sure what you decided, but I would personally hold out. If you are anything like me, every time you look at that carpet, your eye will go right to the black and it will bug you that it is not navy. I saw what someone wrote about the remnants.....that is a great idea!!

Hope all is well with your entire family....can't wait to see more of the new room!!

    Miss You!

  49. Thanks for visiting and commenting on my blog!!! I love having new friends come by for a visit.

In response to your comment about painting toenails red.... I'd much rather have a girly girl and remove red nail polish than have a tomboy and remove mud from nails. Hee hee heee......

    Have a great week!!!!

  50. I would keep looking. In the long run you want to be completely content with your decision!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I think the cheaper one is really cute, but I was actually thinking along the same lines as your second comment! You can often buy remnants for a very small price...you can cut them into squares and put them together into a nice rug with the exact colors you want. Now how you bind them together I don't know...

Something else is maybe you could just add bits of black here and there in the nursery? (Or save yourself all this work and keep looking!) I know how you feel though! It can be so hard to find exactly what you're looking for at price you can afford! I hope you find what exactly what you want! :)

  52. If you love the PBK rug the most then I would keep looking. Also they do sell all their floor samples very cheap from time to time. I am sure you could go into your local store and see if they are going to be selling the one that you want anytime in the near future, and if they are not I am sure they you could leave them your name and number for when they do decide to sell it. And when I say sell them cheap I mean you can buy your 300.00 rug for around 100.00!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I would keep looking. Target has some cute rugs in similar colors to Henry's room.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I think I tried to come and leave a comment on Friday, but was unsuccessful. You've probably already decided by now :) I think either rug would be cute, but if it was me, I think I would hold out until I found a red and navy one. There, that's my two cents worth.

Hope you had a great weekend!!

  55. Black goes with everything. Plus you do not want it to be too matchy-matchy anyway. Definately go for the cheaper. Maybe if you are self-conscious paint something with chalkboard paint in there so it could pick up a little more black. Or you could paint an accessory piece of furniture black too. Go for it!

  57. I think that I would keep on looking, because if you are anything like me you will always wonder if it clashes. Have you checked at Lowes, I know that they usually have reasonably priced rugs for kids rooms. What other stores have you looked at?

    ReplyDelete
  58. the cheaper one...is my vote!
    cute blog...
    thx 4 sharing

  59. I splurged for the pottery barn kids rug that I wanted for my oldest daughter and we will continue using it for many, many years as it has held up beautifully. It is incredibly hard to find good rugs at a good price. I have found a few at target over the years, but they only last a year or two at the most. For my youngest daughter, I bought a rug at Costco for about $50 and it hasn't held up well.
I think you kind of get what you pay for. However, I do recommend you check Lowes and Home Depot for rugs.
Also, Pottery Barn has outlet stores in a couple of places around the country and you can sometimes find things at a HUGE discount there.
Also, try their stores for good markdowns on floor samples.
    Good luck!

  62. Nice blog… you can find more Kids Rugs, which can be used to decorate home.

  63. Can you get a red and white stripe one and paint the white stripes navy blue? My Pastors wife in college was VERY crafty and she painted her dining room rugs. I couuldn't believe it but it actually turned out stunning.

If anyone could paint a rug I would think it would be you : ).

Don't get the cheap one because you will always hate it and it will annoy you. Keep looking! And hoping. AND praying! God cares about even little things like rug stripes. Oh yes he does!

  64. I would wait...just because I am someone that would go CRAZY if something didn't match near perfectly. But, that's just me. If it won't drive you crazy then go for it! Or have you already?!

  65. You can browse target for more beautiful and stylish rugs.
