Happy Thursday! Remember a few days ago I mentioned my favorite Christmas present, one that I would probably break before I figured it out? Some of you correctly guessed this:
I am so excited about this sewing machine, but also so stinkin' intimidated. It's a Janome, which I guess is good, right? My husband, bless his heart, did lots of research to make sure I had something that would last for years and years. Like I said, if I don't break it first.
My first test was to create a little mattress for this baby bed. Nina has been really into "taking care of babies" lately, so when I saw this frame (at Goodwill, can you believe it?) I snapped it up for her.
So far, all I can manage is to sew a straight line. I made a little mattress and pillow, stuffed with some poly-fill. It doesn't look too bad to a two-year-old, but it certainly will win no prizes for neatness or skill!
Too bad Nina's baby doll doesn't fit in the bed. Oh well, like I said, we don't need perfection!Anyway, here's my request. If you have any favorite blogs or websites that you visit, ones that have easy tutorials for sewing beginners like me, would you pass them along? I just need ideas, but I also need some people to hold my hand!

ReplyDeleteSnow day here in Connecticut so I'm catching up and will actually be pulling out my sewing machine this afternoon to work on a few projects. I don't know of any blogs to share with you. My mother gave me basic lessons when I was young and the rest has been self taught through trial and error (lots of that!). There are some very simple patterns out there that walk you through step by step and are easy to understand.

ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to be able to sew beautiful things but I am a frustrated perfectionist and it would take me way too long to complete something after ripping it apart until I got it perfect! Good Luck to you...can't wait to see what else you create. I love the baby bed!

Very nice contraption you have there! I call it that because I can't sew a lick, either! I took Home Ec. in high school and we had to sew a dress to wear for a class fashion show. Well, needless to say, mine was large enough to fit a lady who weighed about 500 lbs! I kid you, not! Plus, the belt was about 8 feet long! It was so hilarious! So, I have not given it a second chance since then. I wish you well on your "journey" with the needle and thread. ♥

ReplyDeleteTook two years of sewing classes in summer school -- my Dad didn't want use (me and twin) being lazy getting tans and watching soaps -- do you believe that!! Anyway, it was so long ago, I still feel like I don't know how to sew at all. I have a great little ancient, portable Singer, but it is covered in dust. ReplyDeleteThis is a great tutorial for making a zippered pouch. I made one to coordinate with my purse and I use it to carry all my essentials that are otherwise floating around in there. They also make great gifts.
Make sure to read your owner's manual. I am a "home ec" teacher and you can avoid a lot of problems just by going through the manual and getting to know what your machine can do :) Practice with the different settings on scraps of fabric.
And don't forget to have fun!

ReplyDeleteI have a sewing machine that has sat in the closet for years because "the guts" of the bobbin fell out right away and I can't figure it out. But there is a sewing place in my small town where you can get lessons and as soon as the weather warms up I'm going to attend. Maybe there is something like that in your town where they sell sewing machines. I know it will be hard with another baby coming but here they are held one hour every Saturday. It could be a nice out for you and bonding time for the kids and Daddy!!

ReplyDeleteI am a beginner sewer too and the first thing I did was sign up for a 4-hour begginer sewing class at a local sewing shop. We spent the first 2 hours getting to know our machines, then the last 2 we made little tote bags. (My instructor reccomended a Janore, by the way.) It was by far the BEST thing I could have done, and it gave me all the confidence I needed to make my daughter's halloween costume this past year. I highly recommend it!

I know I've seen some sewing blogs featured on Todays Creative Blog, it has been a few months though, so check there. Or gooogle sewing blogs. Good luck! It's so fun to learn to sew, but I, like you can only do projects with straight lines! I would suggest buying one of those printed panels from the store and making it. You can get one of a doll or stuffed animal or something like that. I have done a couple and they have taught me quite a bit more. They have step by step instructions.

ReplyDeleteMy mom got me a super fancy-shmancy sewing machine for Christmas a few years ago and it has not gotten too much use. However, I agree that trial and error is the best way to learn and become comfortable with your machine. I swear the first 6 times I used mine I had to get out the directions on how to thread the needle but now I don't need to! Also, check out Amy Butler patterns (I think she has a website too) - they are geared to the beginner and super cute too! She sews home dec stuff, cute purses/bags, aprons and stuff like that. There are a few quilting/sewing shops near me that offer lessons and projects- there's probably some near you too.
You're going to have lots of fun. Just do straight seams until you feel confident and then move to a bigger project. I've sewn since I was 7 or 8, you'll be amazed at how quickly you will get it.

Nice machine!! Dan got me a Singer for Christmas to replace my old one and I am thrilled - but still haven't used it. It needs to find a nice home to stay put in around here. You did great on your first project! I'll be back to check this post since I still consider myself a beginner. Can you believe I had a grandmother who made ALL her own clothes - they were amazing. I kick myself for being a self centered teenager and not stopping to spend the time with her to learn now. Sigh.

ReplyDeleteI love to sew!!!! I went to a fabric store and inquired of classes when I first started and they had classess in the evening that I took. I got the basics down and I got lots of great help learning to use my machine and how to do things like darts, zippers....

I hope I can get a sewing machine, but first I need to learn how to sew. Found someone in my subdivision that teaches, 6 weeks for under $50.00. Don't know if that is good or bad. I have not signed up yet. I also know if you have a Joann's near you they give sewing lessons.
I am jealous! I am going to ask for one for my birthday and then learn - maybe then we can share what we know:)

ReplyDeleteI bought a sewing machine when I had my first daughter to make bibs out of hand towels. It was SOOOOOO hard! I made 2 and they were just adorable.My sisters joke that I could have bought 50 bibs and saved time and money. sewing straight lines is my skill level too!I just keep at it. Have fun!!!

Hubby gave me a sewing machine our first Christmas. I think he had grand plans that I would be making my children's clothes, mending for the homeless, and quilting for children in African countries. Well, it has been a workhorse but after 15 years it needs an overhaul. I'm looking at yours and thinking... that baby looks well oiled. I bet it never jams. I bet it keeps it's tension tuned... Girl you got it made!
ReplyDeleteMy only advice is to not let your kiddos get a hold of your sewing scissors. Not because I've noticed anything terrible when that happens but that's what my mother hollered at me whenever I had them in my hands! Good luck. The bed was a great start!
